so right now i'm in nueva ecija, a provincial area in northern luzon... to non-filipinos, it's like a new yorker going to a rural state :) but apparently, rural provinces have become slaves to technology and urbanization, as evidence by me typing this blog while sitting in my nephew's room, using his new acer computer. (nice set, btw!)
i used to really love going back here and visiting the relatives; i love the quietness and traditionalism, the innocence of it and them all. now, everywhere i turn there are malls, 7/11s, cellphones, computers, newly-constructed buildings - things i see on a daily basis. the whole purpose of coming here is to be free, at least temporarily, of the mundane everyday monotony of typing away at a computer and watching cable tv. it's like i just traveled 4 1/2 hours to another place to do the same damn things. yuck.
but then again, i try to look at the good side: the place hasn't lost all its charms. i still have a little of the scenery i've come to enjoy - the farm fields and carabaos grazing along while plowing or just lazying about. there's nothing like driving down a country road and just seeing ricefields and mountains and blue skies and clouds :) i love the people; they never change. they're still the same loving, caring, hospitable people i've known since i was a kid.
and though my auntie and her family are now living in a newly-built house modernized and upscaled, the surroundings, the atmosphere, the feeling of living here has always been what i've remembered it to be. the best part was seeing the puppy i had given them grow up to be a cute, sweet and healthy dog :) "bubba" as i called him when he was still with me, jumped up and licked my face, hands, arms when he recognized who i was :) that made my day!
