golden globes weren't that golden

maybe it was the lack of drama (at the awards show itself), maybe it was the lack of stars (brad and angie decided to sit this one out), or maybe it was because it went by so fast... whatever the reason, i wasn't that enthusiastic to watch the show by the time they gave out the 2nd award. so what happened?

i didn't so much as enjoyed it, it just wasn't "electric" like previous globes telecasts before. i guess the red carpet set the tone = it was raining the entire time and they were all running around with umbrellas, not good especially when it's supposed to be the part where the stars should've "modeled" their clothes. the show was telecast live from the hilton hotel, so what does that tell ya?

although leo and kate and scorsese and joe were there, all but one (joe) were not nominated, so the excitement of seeing my favorites win was gone by the time i saw them onscreen. kate and leo presented, kate the best actor category and leo joined robert deniro to honor scorsese, giving him the cecil b. demille award for lifetime achievement in film making and preservation. more on that later.

the only other highlights were drew barrymore winning (she is old hollywood - her parents and grandparents were all actors, family dynasty) for grey gardens and robert downey jr.'s awesome, awesome speech =)

i loved mel gibson's schtick LOL i love a guy who can take a joke and laugh at himself =)

glad joe got some airtime and i was even surprised that their movie was actually nominated as best picture musical or comedy =) way to go guys!

so back to the preservation thing. i've known this about scorsese for some time now: he founded and is co-chair of the national center for film and video preservation. from interviews he's done, he vaguely describes it as preserving the best films ever created in history. it's a noble thing, this film preservation. it's as if he created a really elaborate time capsule and our children and their children's children will one day be audiences to human existence today as captured by the films of our lives. what a beautiful gift both to us and to the people who will unwrap it someday.

and here's to hoping that johnny depp gets nominated for SOMETHING next year...
